Baseball Wins Over ONU on Day Three of Action in RussMatt Invitational

Auburndale, Fla. - The Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks baseball team competed in their third day of action on the morning of Monday, March 11th, against the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears in the RussMatt Invitational. The Hawks (2-6) quickly found their offensive as they put up three runs in the first inning. The Polar Bears (3-4) put up some runs in the first inning as well, scoring two to be within one of the Hawks. In the second inning, the Polar Bears took the lead, but Michael Paxson and Connor Blake had other plans as they hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the third to put the Hawks on top. Throughout the rest of the game, the Hawks added three more runs, going on to defeat the Polar Bears 8-4 and record their first win of their spring break trip. 

Illinois Tech 8 - Ohio Northern 4

  • The Hawks started off the game strong, getting multiple runs in the first inning to take the lead. With two outs and a runner on second, Connor Blake stepped up to bat. Blake would go on to hit a double to left field, bringing home Paxson to put the Hawks on the board. Blake then scored when Samuel Sproule followed with a single through the left side. During the play, Sproule advanced to second on the throw. Then, with Matthew Lindenmuth singled to right field, allowing Sproule to score and giving the Hawks a 3-0. In the bottom half of the inning, the Polar Bears Picked up two runs to make the score 3-2 at the end of the first inning. 

  • In the bottom of the second inning, the Polar Bears took the lead with two runs scored. They first tied the game with a sac-fly and then followed with another sac-fly to take the one-run lead. 

  • Then in the top of the third, the Hawks put themselves back on top with two home runs. Michael Paxson and Blake went back-to-back to lead off the inning with solo home runs. Paxson homered to left field while Blake homered to center. At the end of the third inning the Hawks led 5-4.

  • As the lead off batter, Blake homered again during the fifth inning to right field for his second of the game, putting the Hawks ahead 6-4.

  • During the top of the eighth, the Hawks picked up three more runs to secure their victory. With the bases loaded and two outs, Lindenmuth singled to first base to bring home Matthew Bove. In the following at bat, Lucas Waunn was walked, bringing home Blake to give the Hawks the 8-4 victory.  

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Connor Blake - Went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double,  3 RBI's and 4 runs

  • Michael Paxson - Went 1-for-5 with a home run, 1 RBI, and 2 runs

  • Michael Lindenmuth - Went 3-for-5 with 2 RBI's

  • Samuel Sproule - Went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI, 1 run, and a stolen base

  • Matthew Bove - Went 2-for-3 with 1 run and 4 stolen bases

  • Austin Schnurr was named the winning pitcher after pitching 5.1 innings. Schnurr only allowed three hits while striking out three. 

  • Phil Trojanowski picked up the save after pitching 1.1 innings. Trojanowski allowed just one hit.

  • Sam Sells - Went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI and a stolen base

  • Kyler Lapp - Went 3-for-5 with a stolen base

  • Joey Jennedy - Went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 1 run

Up Next

The Hawks will have a one day break before returning to action on Wednesday, March 13 to take on Hope College in their fourth and final day of action in the RussMatt Invitational. Wednesday's game will take place in Davenport, Fla. at North East Regional Park on field 3. First pitch will be thrown at 5:30 PM CT (6:30 PM ET)
