Men's Tennis Drops Opener On Spring Break Trip

Hilton Head Island, SC. - The Illinois Tech men's tennis team opened doubles play in their opening match on their spring break trip by splitting the first two matches with East Texas Baptist. But after dropping the number two doubles match in a close battle, 8-5, the Tigers carried that momentum into singles play, winning five of the six matches en route to a 7-2 match victory over the Scarlet Hawks Tuesday afternoon in Hilton Head, SC. The Scarlet Hawks fell to 2-7 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 7-2.

Head Coach Kris Powell mixed things up in the first match of this week-long trip, with the number one and two doubles pairing working with different partners, and Avneet Singh and Danial Zindani also getting their first singles matches of the season.

Doubles Play (East Texas Baptist 2 - Illinois Tech 1)
After Nabil Fawaz and Pol Dueso Guell fell in their number three doubles match 8-4, the number one doubles team of Davis Housman and Alann Torres, pairing together for the first time this season, won their match 8-4. But the Tigers responded by taking the number three doubles match, as Jordan Lauer and Avneet Singh, also playing together for the first time, fell 8-5.

Singles Play (East Texas Baptist 5 - Illinois Tech 1)
Eduardo Lopez claimed the only singles match victory for the Scarlet Hawks on this day, as he won his number four singles match in come-from-behind fashion, dropping the first set 2-6 before winning the next two sets 6-2 and 1-0, winning the third set tie-breaker 10-6. In the number two singles match, Torres dropped the first set 1-6 but performed better in set two before ultimately losing set two 4-6. Singh lost 5-7, 0-6 in his number five singles match, his first singles match of the season. Also playing in his first singles match of the season, Zindani fell in the number six match 1-6, 2-6. Housman fell in the number one singles match 0-6, 1-6, wile Fawaz lost 0-6, 2-6 in his number three singles match.

The Scarlet Hawks next match on their spring break trip will take place Thursday evening at 5:00 PM CT, when they take on Oswego State of New York at the Hilton Head Resort in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.
