Men’s Lacrosse Falls Short in a Final-Second Goal

Chicago, Ill. - A contest that was determined in the final seconds of action, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks welcomed the Calvin University Knights to Stuart Field for a non-conference match. The Hawks (2-4) and Knights (5-3) ended the first quarter tied before the Hawks took a two goal lead at halftime. During the third quarter, the Hawks remained ahead, but the Knights began to close in on their lead as the Hawks led by just one goal at the end of the third quarter. Then, during the fourth quarter, the two sides battled until the final seconds of action. In the end, it would be the Knights who scored the game winning goal with 3 seconds on the clock to defeat the Hawks 10-9.

First Quarter (Calvin 2 - Illinois Tech 2)

  • Three minutes and twenty seconds into the contest, the Knights Braden Carpenter scored his first goal off an August Bryan assist.

  • Six and a half minutes of action passed before Carpenter once again found the back of the net, this time off a Christian Coler assist to put the Knights ahead 2-0.

  • Reed Tangeman put the Hawks on the board at the 5:17 mark off an Owen Huard assist. Huard passed the ball off to a wide open Tangeman who immediately took the open shot, sending the ball right past the Knights goalkeeper to put the Hawks on the board.

  • The Hawks then tied the game at 2-2 with 1:45 remaining in the quarter. Diego Sosa assisted the goal when he passed the ball to an open Jonathan Vitale. Vitale, who received the ball while falling, was quickly able to get a shot off, sending the ball into the side netting. At the end of the first quarter, the Hawks and Knights were tied 2-2.

Second Quarter (Calvin 0 - Illinois Tech 2)

  • It would take until the final minute of the second quarter before a goal would be scored. With 56 seconds left, Alexander Stokrp scored to put the Hawks ahead. Stokrp, who received the ball behind the goal, took off running to the inside. Just as he got in front of the net, Stokrp simply placed the ball right over the Knights goalkeeper and underneath the crossbar.

  • Huard then extended the Hawks lead with 15 seconds remaining from a Micah Manookian assist. Manookian assisted the play after running freely into the Knights defensive half before laying the ball off to Huard. Huard received the ball and readjusted before firing off a shot into the back of the net. At halftime, the Hawks led the Knights 4-2.

Third Quarter (Calvin 4 - Illinois Tech 3)

  • The Hawks kept the goal scoring alive early in the third quarter with a goal at the 12:48 mark. Sosa found the back of the net off a Ty Dwyer assist. With a defender on him, Dwyer was able to pass the ball off to Sosa. Also with a defender on him, Sosa juked out his defender, switched his stick from his left to his right, and scored with a shot into the upper 90.

  • Then, at 9:18, the Hawks extended their lead to four goals with Huards second goal of the game. With a defender on him the whole time, Huard was able to push his way up close to the goal before placing a shot right past the goalkeeper to give the Hawks a 6-2 lead over the Knights.

  • The Knights broke the Hawks goal scoring streak with a goal at 7:32. Carpenter recorded a hat-trick with the goal as the Knights trailed the Hawks 6-3

  • Immediately, the Hawks answered with a goal to take back a four-goal lead. Huard scored his third goal of the game, earning himself a hat-trick at the 7:11 mark. Behind and wide of the goal, Huard received the ball. With a defender once again on him, Huard took off sprinting, making his way towards goal before placing his shot just to the inside of the goalkeeper. Here, the Hawks led the Knights 7-3.

  • To end the quarter, the Knights picked up three straight goals to come within one of the Hawks. Nick Griffith got the action going for the away team with a goal at 6:08. Then, at 3:20, Coler scored in a man-up opportunity with a goal off a Jacob Bledose assist. Griffith then scored his second goal of the game with 2:21 remaining. At the end of the third quarter, the Knights closed the gap but still trailed as the Hawks led them 7-6.

Fourth Quarter (Calvin 4 - Illinois Tech 2)

  • For the first time since the second quarter, the game would be tied as the Knights scored at the 10:32 mark to make the game 7-7.

  • 6:16 passed before another goal would be scored. The Hawks went back ahead at the 4:16 mark when Tangeman scored his second of the game. With no one in front of him, Tangeman fired off a sling shot of a goal to give the Hawks a one-goal lead.

  • Answering quickly, the Knights tied the contest once again at the 3:55 mark when Josh Moyer scored off a Coler assist.

  • The Knights then took the lead for the first time since the first quarter when Jordan Warners scored an unassisted goal at 3:30 remaining.

  • In a man-up situation, the Hawks were able to tie the contest at 9-9 when Sosa scored his second of the game, this time off a Tangeman assist. The goal came after Dwyer passed the ball off to Tangeman who immediately sent the ball across a wide open Sosa. Sosa took the open opportunity to fire off a shot towards goal and into the back of the net. With just 1:28 remaining, it seemed as if the contest was going to go into overtime.

  • Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Knights had other plans. With just three seconds remaining in regulation, the Knights Warners scored the game winner with another unassisted goal, ultimately giving the Knights the 10-9 victory over the Hawks.
