Chicago, Ill. - At Ed Glancy Field on a partly cloudy day, the Illinois Tech Scarlet Hawks baseball team hosted the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Raiders for a day-time Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) double-header Wednesday contest. The Hawks (11-12, 7-3) took game one from the Raiders (13-8, 7-3) 3-2 in 7 innings with the help of a Tyler Gutsfeld lead-off home run to start the game. Then, in game two, Gutsfeld hit for the cycle, helping lead the Hawks to a 9-2 victory over the Raiders. Gutsfeld hit a double in the third inning, homered in the fifth, tripled in seventh, and singled in the eighth.
Wednesday's two victories move the Hawks to a five-game winning streak.
Game One (Illinois Tech 3 - MSOE 2 (7 innings))

Tyler Gutsfeld made his presence known right away in game one with a lead-off home run to right field to put the Hawks on the board early. The solo home run gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead over the visiting Raiders.

The Raiders put up a run in the top of the second to tie the contest. With runners on first and third, Kyle Labedz singled to the left side, bringing in Micah Overley. After two innings, the Hawks and Raiders were tied at 1-1.

In the top of the third, the lead off hitter Blake Hall homered for the Raiders to center field, giving them a 2-1 lead.

After a scoreless fourth inning, the Hawks would bring in their winning runs during the bottom of the fifth to secure the 3-2 victory. With runners on second and third and one out, Samuel Sproule singled through the left side, bringing home Michael Paxson. Michael Lindenmuth stepped up to bat next and singled up the middle, bringing in Connor Blake to give the Hawks their ultimate 3-2 victory.

The first run of the game came in favor of the Hawks in the bottom of the first inning, giving them the early lead. With Gutsfeld on third and one out, Sproule doubled, bringing home Gutsfeld to put the Hawks on the board.

Innings two through four would come and go scoreless. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks would extend their lead when Gutsfeld hit a 2-run home run to right field. At the end of the fifth inning, the Hawks led the Raiders 3-0.

Following a scoreless sixth inning, the Hawks would add two more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Following a Gutsfeld triple and a Michael Paxson hit by pitch, Blake doubled, bringing in Gutsfeld and advancing Paxson to third. Paxson then scored on the following at bat when Sproule hit a sac-bunt to put the Hawks ahead 5-0 over the Raiders.

The Hawks secured four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Matthew Bove got the action going with a single to left center, scoring Jack Friar. Then, after a Gutsfeld single placed him on first and Bove on third, a Paxson single brought Bove home and advanced Gutsfeld to second. A balk advanced both runners before Blake hit a single to bring in both Gutsfeld and Paxson, giving the Hawks a 9-0 lead.

For the visiting Raiders, their only runs in the game came in the top of the ninth. With runners on second and third, Brandon Beauchamp singled up the middle to bring in both runners. With bases loaded, the Hawks got out of danger with a double-play to end the game, recording themselves a 9-2 victory!

The Hawks now turn their focus to Saturday, April 13, when they travel to Plymouth, Wis. to take on the Lakeland University Muskies in a NACC double header. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12:00 PM with game two to follow.
