Chicago, Ill. - After dropping their season-opening match to #15 ranked Calvin University 4-0 last Friday, the Illinois Tech women's soccer team was looking to right the ship in their home-opener against Carroll University Thursday night. And right the ship they did, as the Scarlet Hawks routed the Pioneers 6-0 to even their record on the young season to 1-1-0. The Pioneers fell to 1-2-1.
Six different Scarlet Hawks scored goals on the evening, including the first career NCAA goal for first-year forward
Eva Narvarte.
How It Happened
First Half
- A takeaway by the Scarlet Hawks' Caitie Chismarich in the Hawks defensive zone was directed to Kayla Smith, who took the ball up the left sideline, cut inside and crossed to a streaking Kayla Thomas in the middle. With a defender closing in, Thomas drove forward a few strides, stopped, spun 180 degrees and dropped a pass back to Allison Murray, who stopped the ball and blasted a left-footer 30 yards out and into the top left corner for a 1-0 Scarlet Hawks lead at 20:34.
- The Scarlet Hawks' Jillian Oligschlaeger took a pass on the left sideline and fed it inside to Narvarte, who redirected the ball to a cutting Chismarich left of goal. With Chismarich approaching the goal box, she attempted to center the ball to a charging Murray. Murray got tied up with the Pioneers' Samantha Anderson, with the ball deflecting back to their right. From there, Narvarte outraced Carroll's Jessica Stepien for the ball and connected on a right-footer 12 yards out into the low right corner for a 2-0 Hawks' lead at 29:34.
- With time winding down in the first half, the Scarlet Hawks' Kaitlyn Walsh received a throw-in from the right sideline and dribbled inside towards goal and then passed to her left and back to Amelia Moseman. The Pioneers' defender attempted the takeaway but was only able to slightly tip the ball, allowing Moseman to continue to her left on the top line of the penalty box, where she fired a left-footer that curled into the left corner, extending the Hawks' lead to 3-0 at 44:01.
Second Half
- The Scarlet Hawks wasted no time getting on the board in the second half. With a brief rainfall coming down, the Hawks' Lucy Jorjorian set up for a corner kick at the right corner. The corner ball sailed over the head of the Hawks' Gabriella Baltes, but her defense partner Mary Frampton was behind her, got a leg on the ball and deflected it off a Pioneers' defender and into the back of the net for a 4-0 Scarlet Hawks lead at 47:00.
- Less than two minutes later, the Scarlet Hawks responded again. A great individual effort by the Hawks' Murray to steal the ball near the right sideline led to her pass inside to Narvarte. Narvarte sent a cross to Smith on the left side. Smith went on a straight line towards the right sideline, circled around a defender pulling at her jersey while turning left heading towards goal. After breaking free from her defender, Smith dribbled to the top right side of the penalty area, drawing the goalkeeper towards the right post, and fired a right-footer into the vacant left corner for a 5-0 Hawks' lead at 48:46.
- A corner kick by Leyna Yonehara from the left corner was passed back to Annika Torbenson near the left sideline. Torbenson lofted a left-footer into the box, where a Pioneers' defender headed the ball down off the chest of Baltes. Without the ball hitting the ground, Baltes right-footed the deflection into the net from the top of the penalty area to close out the scoring, giving the Hawks a 6-0 lead at 71:40.
