Chicago, Ill. - With their big conference road win at Edgewood in their rear-view mirror, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team was looking to lock up the NACC regular season title Friday night when they took on Marian at the XS Tennis Center. The Scarlet Hawks were ready for the task at hand, as they defeated the Sabres 7-0 to clinch first-place overall and the number one seed in the NACC post-season tournament next April.
This was the first time in school history that the women's tennis team had won first-place overall in the NACC regular season. During the team's NCAA qualifying year in 2022, the team had finished in third place that season.
The Scarlet Hawks wasted no time getting on the board in the match during doubles play. The number three doubles team of
Paige Geiger and
Angelica Conwell made quick work of Marian's Savannah Clark and Madeline DeVries, 6-0. The Hawks' number two team of
Maddalena Elisa Rosati Dumangane and
Maia Lecuona Ramos finished next, taking down Marian's Josephine Bruch and Jennifer Pierga, 6-1. With the lone doubles point already in hand, the Hawks' number one team of
Martyna Kalinowska and
Thea Salcedo completed the doubles sweep with a 6-2 win over Luquin Monserrat and Jullian Traver.
Salcedo would give the Scarlet Hawks a 2-0 lead when singles play commenced, as she defeated Bruch in the number three singles match 6-0, 6-0. Lecuona Ramos won the next match for Illinois Tech, defeating Marian's Clark in the number four match, 6-0, 6-1. With a commanding 3-0 match lead, the Hawks were looking to clinch the overall match victory in their remaining contests. Kalinowska would achieve the honors for the Hawks, winning her number one singles match against Traver 6-2, 6-0 for the clinching 4th team point. Rosati Dumangane would follow next, as she won her number two singles match 6-0, 6-1 over the Sabres' Luquin. Sitting with an insurmountable 5-0 lead, the Hawks completed the match sweep in the number five and six singles matches, with Geiger winning her number five match against DeVries, 6-0, 6-1, and Conwell securing the sweep in her number six match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Marian's Morgan Hietpas.
