Women's Soccer Overpowers Lakeland In Bounce-Back Win

Chicago, Ill. — After dropping their first match of the season Monday afternoon at #7 University of Chicago, Illinois Tech women's soccer was looking for some redemption when they hosted Lakeland University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup Wednesday night at Stuart Field. The Scarlet Hawks achieved redemption and then some, as they overpowered the Muskies 13-0 to improve to 11-1-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the conference. Lakeland fell to 0-10-1 overall and 0-7-0 in NACC play.

Several Hawks put their name in the box score on this evening, none more so than Joanne Porter. The junior tallied nine points on four goals and one assist. Kayla Smith scored three goals. Abby Cooley added two goals, while Sophia Arntz had one goal and two assists.

The match began with Illinois Tech establishing early control. Hannah Ramos opened the scoring in the 5th minute, swiftly followed by Kaitlyn Walsh's goal in the 10th minute, setting a prelude for how the evening would progress for the Hawks. Kayla Smith further extended the lead with a goal in the 13th minute. Illinois Tech maintained momentum throughout the half, with Smith scoring again in the 30th minute to open up a four-goal lead. Illinois Tech's defense limited the Muskies' opportunities and held them without a shot, closing the first half with a 4-0 lead.

The second half began with Illinois Tech asserting control, quickly capitalizing on a corner kick with Joanne Porter scoring in the 50th minute, assisted by Annika Torbenson. This set the tone for a series of offensive strikes. Kayla Thomas and Abby Cooley each found the net in rapid succession, extending the lead to 7-0. Illinois Tech maintained relentless pressure, with Porter adding another goal, assisted by Sophia Arntz, and later converting a penalty kick to further widen the margin. Cooley and Arntz joined in with goals, continuing the scoring surge with assists from Gabrielle West and Porter, respectively. The half concluded with Illinois Tech dominating possession and scoring opportunities, finishing with a decisive 13-0 victory.
