Chicago, Ill. - Antonia Martinez and the Illinois Tech women's lacrosse team had several opportunities to put the ball in the back of the net in their match against North Central on a frigid Saturday afternoon at Stuart Field. But with the clock running out in the fourth quarter, Martinez took a pass from
Isabelle Niebler, cut toward the net and fired a shot past Cardinals' goalkeeper Oran Wilkins with 7 seconds left to give the Scarlet Hawks their loan goal of the match in their 19-1 defeat to North Central. The Hawks fell to 0-4 on the season. The Cardinals improved to 2-0.
After getting shut out in their home opener Wednesday night against Illinois Wesleyan, the last-second goal by Martinez was a welcome sight by the Scarlet Hawks, who were able to record 11 shots in the match Saturday after only having two shots on Wednesday. For Martinez, it was her fifth goal of the season to lead the team. In addition to the goal, Martinez had 4 shots, 2 on goal.
Mercy Godfrey recorded 11 saves in the match, including seven in the second half.
Niebler had a very active match, with the assist on Martinez' goal to go along with 4 shots, 2 ground balls and 1 draw control.
Lucy Jorjorian tallied 3 shots, 3 ground balls and 1 draw control.
