Fond du Lac, Wis. - Despite playing one player down for the entirety of their match at Marian Saturday afternoon, the Illinois Tech women's lacrosse team put up a tough battle against the Sabres before running out of steam in the fourth quarter in their 20-10 loss. Illinois Tech drops to 0-4 in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play. The Sabres improved to 1-3 in conference.
Iona Pettigrew set a career-high in goals in a game with three in the match against Marian. Pettigrew scored on a free position attempt with a 1:35 remaining in the 1st quarter to cut the Hawks deficit to 7-4 at the end of the quarter. Pettigrew followed that up with the first goal of the second quarter at 11:53, on a feed from
Antonia Martinez. Pettigrew notched her hat-trick and career single-game high when she scored on another free position attempt with 2:14 remaining in the third quarter to pull the Hawks within five at 14-9. Pettigrew has scored 6 goals on the season. Pettigrew also tallied one ground ball and one draw control.
Martinez continued to be a force offensively for the Scarlet Hawks, scoring six goals on the day to lead all scores. For Martinez, it was her second consecutive game with six goals scored. Martinez has scored at least one goal (and usually more) in 12 of the 14 games the Hawks have played this season, and has 39 goals on the season. Martinez also recovered 3 ground balls, had 2 caused turnovers and won 9 draw controls.Â
Isabelle Niebler had the other goal for the Scarlet Hawks, her 7th goal on the season with 2:30 remaning in the second quarter on a free-position attempt. Niebler led the Hawks with 4 ground balls, while winning one draw control.
