Terre Haute, Ind. - After losing a two-goal lead and settling for a draw Wednesday night at home against Hope College, the Illinois Tech women's soccer team was looking to get back on track with their first road match of the season at Rose-Hulman Saturday afternoon. Mission accomplished, as the Scarlet Hawks got a late first half goal, scored another pair in the second half, and shut down the Fightin' Engineers en route to a 3-0 non-conference victory. The Scarlet Hawks improved to 4-0-1 overall. Rose-Hulman fell to 1-3-1.
The shutout by the Scarlet Hawks was their fourth of the season out of five matches played.
In a first half that saw the Scarlet Hawks outshoot Rose-Hulman 10-1, it was a goal by
Grace Yager in the 33rd minute, assisted by
Kelly Hitchcock, that put the Hawks in front 1-0. For Yager, it was her team-leading 3rd goal of the season. Illinois Tech would continue to pressure but went into halftime still only holding the one goal lead.
The second half saw more even play from a shot-perspective, but it was the Hawks who would break through first, with
Kaitlyn Walsh scoring off a feed from
Kayla Smith in the 62nd minute to extend the Hawks' lead to 2-0.
Gabriella Baltes would add a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute to give Illinois Tech a 3-0 lead for the eventual final score.
