Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | by Eric Willuweit

5-0 Start In NACC Play As Women's Tennis Downs Concordia Wisconsin

Mequon, Wis. - Despite another conference match in which they lost the opening doubles point, the Illinois Tech women's tennis team stayed true to script by winning singles play in their afternoon match at Concordia Wisconsin, winning all six matches for a 6-1 team victory over the Falcons. The Scarlet Hawks remained unbeaten in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) play, improving to 5-0 (5-1 overall). The Falcons fell to 3-3 in NACC play, and 3-4 overall.

In doubles play, the Scarlet Hawks split the first two matches, with the number one team of Martyna Kalinowska and The Salcedo falling to the Falcons' Claire Kelley and Maddie Brashaw 4-6, while the number two team of Maddalena Elisa Rosati Dumangane and Maia Lecuona Ramos winning 7-5 over Payton Steward and Taylor Weiner. That left the number three singles match of the Scarlet Hawks' Paige Geiger and Angelica Conwell against the Falcons' Abigail Haley and Katelyn de Guzman to decide the lone doubles point. In a close battle, the Falcons number three team won 7-5.

But as they had done in many of their previous conference matches, the Scarlet Hawks shook off losing the doubles point by taking control of singles play. Salcedo made quick work of Steward in their number three singles match 6-0, 6-0, followed by Geiger with a strong 6-1, 6-1 win in her number five singles match against de Guzman. After Rosati Dumangane dispatched the Falcons' Brashaw 6-2, 6-1 in their number two singles match, suddenly the Scarlet Hawks had come back to lead the match 3-1. Lecuona Ramos would clinch the team victory for the Scarlet Hawks in her number four singles match, securing a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Haley to give the Hawks the 4th and deciding match point. All that remained was the final margin of victory in the match, and Kalinowska and Conwell both overcame first set losses in their singles matches to win their second sets and force third set super-tiebreakers. Kalinowska won her number one singles match over Kelley 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(10-6), while Conwell defeated Weiner 1-6, 6-2, 1-0(10-7) in her number six singles match for the final 6-1 match score.
