Conway's Goal Sends Women's Soccer to Semifinals of NACC Tournament

Chicago, Ill.— Women's Soccer clears the first hurdle in their march for another NACC tournament championship beating Concordia Chicago 1-0 on Saturday in the quarterfinal match. The Scarlet Hawks finished with a 24-2 shot advantage, including an 18-0 margin in the second half, while holding the Cougars without a shot on goal. The Scarlet Hawks are 15-6-0 overall.  The Cougars close the season with a 6-11-1 overall record.

How It Happened

The Scarlet Hawks generated the first attacking sequence with corner kicks at 2:38 and 3:59 before Emma Conway recorded a shot at 4:50. The Cougars got an attempt from Mia Hirayama at 8:31, but the Scarlet Hawks had the longer middle stretch, with Tvesa Vathulya, Eva Narvarte and Taylor Hernandez each taking shots, including two Narvarte attempts saved by Naomi Gonzales. The half became more stop-start after Kayla Thomas was shown a yellow card at 26:59, and both teams added fouls before Hirayama missed high at 33:36. Caroline Bock had the Scarlet Hawks' final shot of the half at 38:14, and neither team scored before halftime.

Early in the second half, the Scarlet Hawks earned a corner at 47:29 before Vathulya hit the crossbar at 49:18 and forced a save from Naomi Gonzales at 52:55. After another Vathulya shot was saved at 57:20 and a corner followed at 57:26, Conway scored from Vathulya's assist at 57:46 to open the scoring and put the Scarlet Hawks ahead 1-0. The Scarlet Hawks continued generating chances after the goal, including attempts by Kayla Thomas, Kaitlyn Walsh and Hernandez, then recorded seven shots from 69:15 to 76:52 without adding another goal. Three late corners between 80:18 and 83:27 kept the Scarlet Hawks in the attacking end, and Vathulya put one more shot on frame at 89:54 before the Scarlet Hawks finished off the 1-0 win.
