WHEATON, Ill. — Illinois Tech women's tennis faced a tough match on Friday, falling to Wheaton College (13-4) with a final score of 6-1 at the Wheaton Sport Center. Despite the loss, first-year Maia Lecouna Ramos earned two wins on the evening, posting a win in the number 4 singles match and a win in the number 2 doubles match with doubles partner
Maddalena Elisa Rosati Dumangane.
Illinois Tech now stands at a 9-8 overall record, while Wheaton boasts a 13-4 tally.
Match Highlights
Wheaton College grabbed the doubles point, claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The duo of Madeline Gentry and Tatum Thurstone defeated
Martyna Kalinowska and
Thea Salcedo 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, while Sophie Dew and Carly O'Leary swept
Paige Geiger and
Angelica Conwell 6-0 at No. 3 doubles. However, the Scarlet Hawks shone at No. 2 doubles, where Maddalena Dumangane and
Maia Lecuona Ramos edged out Janet Kondo and Ella Malone in a nail-biting 7-6(3) finish.
In singles play, Wheaton extended their lead with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, where Gentry overcame Kalinowska 6-2, 6-3. Thurstone continued the streak at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Dumangane. Wheaton's Malone bested Salcedo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles, and Dew secured a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles against Geiger.
Illinois Tech's highlight of the day came from Lecuona Ramos, who triumphed at No. 4 singles, defeating Kondo 6-3, 6-3. Despite this success, Wheaton sealed their overall victory with wins in the remaining matches, as Mia Luo shut out Conwell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles, wrapping up the 6-1 match for the Thunder.
