Chicago, Ill. — With the conference season-opener on the horizon, Illinois Tech women's soccer was looking to get back into the win column when they took on North Park University Monday night at Stuart Field. The Scarlet Hawks got what they were looking for, as they defeated the Vikings 4-2.
Tvesa Vathulya scores a pair of goals. The Scarlet Hawks generated seven shots and two corner kicks during a first-half pressure stretch and finished with a 23-12 shot advantage.
The Scarlet Hawks are 2-3-0 overall. The Vikings are 2-3-1 overall.
How It Happened
Olivia Roy put an early shot on frame before
Eva Narvarte converted a penalty kick at 1:45 to open the scoring for the Scarlet Hawks.
Clara Estiandan saved Vikings shots at 3:11 and 14:24 around two Vikings corner kicks, and Roy scored at 7:13 to extend the lead to 2-0. The Scarlet Hawks kept the pressure on later in the half, generating seven shots and two corner kicks from 18:21 through 25:41, including multiple saves forced by Roy,
Tvesa Vathulya and Narvarte. Roy added another shot on goal at 35:12, Estiandan stopped the Vikings again at 38:10, and the Scarlet Hawks reached halftime ahead 2-0.
After the Vikings opened the second half with a corner kick and two Maja Applequist shots, the Scarlet Hawks stretched the margin at 49:04 when Vathulya scored off a
Leyna Yonehara assist to make it 3-0. The Vikings got one back at 52:02 on Applequist's goal from Ava Balmaseda, but the Scarlet Hawks created the next extended attacking stretch with two Roy shots, a Vathulya attempt, a
Gabrielle West shot saved by Linn Nilsson Forsell, a
Grace Yager shot and two corner kicks between 55:25 and 61:34. The Vikings put together chances from Balmaseda and later forced saves by
Katia Blatnik, while Vathulya converted a penalty kick at 64:21 to push the Scarlet Hawks' lead to 4-1. Lily Cerjak scored for the Vikings off an Applequist assist at 86:19, and the Scarlet Hawks added late shots from
Kaitlyn Walsh and
Elisa Salcedo before closing out the 4-2 win.
