Chicago, Ill. — In a tightly packed top half of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference, a pair of 2-1-0 NACC teams battled Saturday afternoon at Stuart Field, as Illinois Tech men's soccer hosted Edgewood. The Scarlet Hawks lost 1-0, with a Connor Gage goal with just under 11 minutes remaining in the first half stood up for the Eagles. The Hawks finished with an 8-6 shot advantage, including five attempts in the second half, but put one shot on goal.
Illinois Tech is 5-4-0 overall and 2-2-0 in conference play. The Eagles are 3-4-2 overall and 3-1-0 in conference play.
How It Happened
Illinois Tech generated the first chance of the half when
Junior Pineda-Alcala put a shot on frame at 3:35, and the home side added a corner kick and an
Adrian Cogolludo attempt in the opening 10 minutes. The Eagles worked into the attack later in the half, with shots from James Gorriceta and Riley Kann before Connor Gage scored at 34:12 to put the Eagles ahead 1-0. Illinois Tech earned three corner kicks after the goal, including two in quick succession at 34:12 and 34:14 and another at 39:35, but did not record an equalizer.
David Rodriguez saved Stephen Kaster's shot at 43:41 after a late Eagles corner sequence, and the Eagles took the 1-0 lead into halftime.
After the Eagles earned an early corner, Illinois Tech pushed forward while down 1-0, starting with
Tomas Rebelatto's shot at 50:46 and a corner kick at 53:18.
Daniel Stewart, Cogolludo and
Paul Balea added attempts during a sustained stretch of pressure, and Cogolludo put another shot wide at 65:06 before Illinois Tech earned a corner at 65:14. The Eagles generated a Riley Kann shot at 71:18 and corners at 76:53 and 81:27 as the half became more physical, with Gavin Lewis and Austin Mullen receiving yellow cards for the Eagles.
Theo Balea was booked at 88:26, and neither side scored in the second half as the Eagles finished off a 1-0 result.
