Women's Soccer Blanks Occidental to Start West Coast Weekend

Los Angeles, Ca — Women's Soccer stated their weekend west coast trip with a win at Occidental by a score of 2-0 on Friday. The Scarlet Hawks scored once in each half and put seven of their 10 shots on goal while recording the shutout. The Scarlet Hawks are 1-1-0 overall. Occidental is 0-2-0 overall.

How it Happened
Olivia Roy gave the Scarlet Hawks the first-half breakthrough in the 27th minute, scoring at 26:04 to put the Scarlet Hawks ahead 1-0. Earlier, the Scarlet Hawks tested Melanie Rodriguez twice, with Tvesa Vathulya forcing a save at 4:12 and Emma Conway doing the same at 8:39. Occidental generated pressure through the middle of the half, but Clara Estiandan made saves at 19:17 and 26:44, and the Scarlet Hawks also earned a corner kick in the 36th minute. Estiandan added another save at 37:19, and the Scarlet Hawks took the 1-0 lead into halftime.

The Scarlet Hawks added to their lead early in the second half, with Leena Almeqbeli scoring off Vathulya's assist at 47:55 to make it 2-0. Roy put another shot on frame in the 55th minute, and the Scarlet Hawks followed with back-to-back corners at 66:35 and 67:04 while keeping Occidental off the scoreboard. The half grew more physical from there, including fouls on both teams and a yellow card to Elisa Salcedo at 77:58, but the Scarlet Hawks still created chances as Taylor Hernandez shot high, Conway forced a save by Melanie Rodriguez and the Scarlet Hawks earned another corner. The Scarlet Hawks continued to press with a Hernandez shot saved and a Kaitlyn Walsh attempt wide in the 84th minute, then Katia Blatnik stopped a bottom-center shot at 86:01 before the Scarlet Hawks closed out the 2-0 final.
