Mount Pleasant, Wis. - Heading into Saturday's final day of the Liberal Arts Conference Championships, the Illinois Tech swimming and diving team stacked several successful performances Friday on day three of competition, with nine top three finishes, a first place finish for Bjarne van Oord in the men's 100 yard backstroke, and second place finishes for both the men's and women's teams in the 200 yard medley relay, including another men's school record.
van Oord finished with a time of 49.66 to take top honors in the men's 100 yard backstroke. van Oord was also a part of the men's 200 yard medley relay team, along with Ian Novak, Giorgio Turchetti and Aidan Chance, that broke a 5-year-old school record with a time of 1:32.30.
Alexandre Ducret took second place honors in the men's 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.68, while
Kayla Matsumoto also earned a second-place medal in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.27. Matsumoto took home another second place medal in the women's 200 yard medley relay along with teammates
Taryn Oser,
Nethmi Bopearatchy and
Claire van Biljon when they clocked in at 1:49.57.
Men's diver Colin Schultz was one of six Scarlet Hawks to earn third place finishes in their events, with Schultz earning the third place metal in the men's 1 meter/11 dive competition with a score of 317.35. Others achieving third place medals were:
- Anna Malik - women's 400 yard IM - 5:02.07
- Don Rose - men's 100 yard butterfly - 50.26
- Eli Riegler - men's 200 yard freestyle - 1:44.15
- Taryn Oser - women's 100 yard breaststroke - 1:08.52
- Giorgio Turchetti - men's 100 yard breaststroke - 57.34
In total, the Scarlet Hawks had 15 individuals reach A finals for the day.
Heading into the final day of competition on Saturday, the men's team sits in second place with 335 points. The women's team is currently in fourth place with 184 points.
