Mount Pleasant, Wis. - Two days into the Liberal Arts Championships,
Claire van Biljon continues her winning ways, and school records have fallen on back-to-back days for Illinois Tech swimming and diving as they once again host the conference championships, this year a few miles north of the Illinois-Wisconsin border.
van Biljon took first place in the women's 50 yard freestyle final on Thursday night, clocking in with a time of 23.95, to give the Scarlet Hawks their first top medal in the meet.
On opening night on Wednesday, the Scarlet Hawks men's 800 yard freestyle relay team of Alexandre Ducret, David Halmy, Don Rose and Bjarne van Oord broke a 16-year-old school record with a time of 6:53.27, earning them second place in the event final.Â
The men's 400 yard medley relay team of van Oord, Giorgio Turchetti, Rose and Ducret followed that up on Thursday night with a new school record time of 3:22.35, breaking the previous record set in 2020. The Hawks also earned second place in the event final. The men's team has medaled in all three team relay events through the first two days of competition.
Not to be outdone, the women's 400 yard medley relay team of
Kayla Matsumoto,
Taryn Oser,
Nethmi Bopearatchy and van Biljon took second place honors in the event final Thursday night with a time of 4:02.79.
On Wednesday night, the women's 800 yard freestyle relay team of van Biljon, Matsumoto,
Bianca Perez and
Anna Malik took third place honors with a time of 8:19.75. The women's team has medaled in two of the first three relay events through the first two days of competition.
