Chicago, Ill. - With the completion of his second tour of duty and his seventh season overall as the head coach of the Illinois Tech women's lacrosse program, Kirk Lamitie will be stepping aside from his coaching role and into a full-time athletics administration role as the Assistant Director of Athletics - Director of Compliance and Facilities.
Lamitie had already been serving as the director of athletics facilities since the start of the 2023-24 season, and his efforts to improve the upkeep of the existing facilities while planning for the future gave Assistant Vice President - Director of Athletics Usha Gilmore the confidence to place Lamitie in his expanded role.
"I am excited about Kirk transitioning into an administrative role," said Gilmore. "He has proven himself to be trustworthy and has done an exceptional job as our director of facilities."
Although he will be stepping away from his passion coaching college lacrosse, Lamitie is ready for the next chapter in his athletics career.
"I'm excited for the opportunities and challenges ahead in this change in my career," said Lamitie. "Over 20 years ago I made becoming a collegiate lacrosse coach my dream job and while it was a winding road to reach that point, I was able to live my dream of collegiate coaching and inspiring young people to fight through adversity and challenges to help them become better people for the future. Now, I am excited to be able to do the same at a different level and impact more student athletes. 11 years ago I started this journey at Illinois Tech and today I'm eager for the next steps to continue the growth of the university and athletic department" Lamitie concluded.
Lamitie was originally hired in August of 2013 to build and lead the school's women's lacrosse program. After an 0-12 start in the team's inaugural season in 2014, the team improved each subsequent season, culminating in the 2017 season with a 15-2 overall record and a 10-1 conference record and share of first place in the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference (MWLC). Lamitie was named the MWLC Coach of the Year for the 2016 season. He finished with an overall record of 33-29 during his first four seasons with the school prior to his departure at the conclusion of the 2017 season.
Lamitie returned to Illinois Tech in 2022 to once again lead the women's lacrosse program, first as the interim head coach for the 2022 season, and then had the interim tag removed in the summer of 2022 to become the full-time head coach for women's lacrosse once more. Across seven total seasons as head coach, Lamitie's teams produced several all-conference and all-academic student-athletes, while maintaining women's lacrosse as a viable athletic program offering for the university, providing opportunities for high school girls to continue their lacrosse playing careers at the NCAA Division III level.
In between his two separate stints as the women's lacrosse head coach, Lamitie served as the head coach for the Lewis University women's lacrosse program from 2017-2021, and as the general manager for the True Illinois Lacrosse girls program from 2021-2022.
Lamitie graduated from California State University - Chico in 2003 with a BA in Physical Education.
One of the first orders of business for Lamitie in his new role will be to help find his successor for the women's lacrosse head coach position. He, along with Gilmore, have been actively recruiting for the position, and hope to have the new head coach in place this summer.
