Bumpass Goes The Distance and Bats Come Alive

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Sheboygan, Wis. – Illinois Tech Baseball went north to take on the Lakeland College Muskies on Wednesday. It took another stellar pitching performance to get the win 1-0 in game one. Then the bats really broke out to result the 13-1 victory in game two. The Hawks are now 10-2 on the season with games again Friday.

Game 1

With both teams putting up 5 hits each and a couple of errors the scoring was at a premium. Austin Boos (JR, Indianapolis, Ind.) let the way with two of the hits. His leadoff at bat in the top of the first inning was a screaming line drive to right field and the Lakeland fielder misplayed the ball resulting in Boos moving up all the way to 3rd base. The very next hitter William Cronin (SR, Orland Park, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Boos. That is the recap of the game 1 scoring. Cronin, James Tarala (SO, Crown Point, Ind.) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (SR, Chicago, Ill.) both added one hit a piece.

Kyle Bumpass (SO, Crete, Ill.) had yet another stunning pitching performance since transferring into Illinois Tech this season. He went 7.0 innings allowing 5 hits, leaving 5 runners stranded, with no walks and 3 strikeouts. Bumpass not only gets his first collegiate pitching win but his first of the season and his first as a Scarlet Hawk. With the complete game shutout performance Bumpass takes his 0.57 earned run average (ERA) to put him 4th in the country with the USCAA.

Game 2

In the second game Tech came out swinging hot sticks. With 13 runs on 15 hits in the game plus quality pitching and solid defense were just the recipe needed today for the victory. Seven Hawks registered a hit in the game and five of the seven had multiple hits. Austin Boos had 3 hits (one double and one triple), 2 runs scored, 2 runs batted in (RBI), and a walk. William Cronin had 2 hits, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, one walk and one strikeout. Michael Malfeo (SR, Orland Park, Ill.) ended with 3 hits (one home run), 2 runs scored and 3 RBI. Brian Colon (JR, Carolina, PR) also had 3 hits (2 homeruns), 3 runs scored and 5 RBI. Sam Pung (JR, Ludington, Mich.) added 2 doubles and one RBI. Darwin Argumedo (SR, Cartegena, Columbia) and Ryan Fitzpatrick both tabbed one hit each and 3 runs scored combine.

For the pitching the Hawks split the game up with some arms that had not thrown since the Arizona trip. Starter Cory WIniecki (SO, Des Plaines, Ill.) got the win to go (2-0) on the season. He went 2.0 innings scheduled allowing 3 hits, 1 run (earned), giving up 2 walks. Next up was Conner Wiebell (JR, Cincinatti, Ohio) for a 3.0 inning stint allowing no hits, no runs, on 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. William Sierzega (SO, Chicago, Ill.) came in for 1.0 innings in the 6th and threw just 4 pitches (all strikes) to get the 3 outs. And Andrew Lamkin (FR, Washington, Mich.) came in for the final outs giving up only one hit and nothing else.

Tech baseball is now on a 8 game winning streak. And the pitching and defense is catching up to the offensive production. Next up is Friday, April 03, 2015 against Maranatha University in Watertown, Wisconsin.
