Scarlet Hawks Sweep Sabres at Home

CHICAGO—The Illinois Institute of Technology baseball team embarked on a bonus Sunday-afternoon home bout against Marian (Wis.) at Ed Glancy Field. The Scarlet Hawks converted their second sweep of the season with 11-9 and 18-8 victories over the Sabres.

The Scarlet Hawks improve to 5-1, while Marian (Wis.) falls to 3-9. 

Illinois Tech 11, Marian (Wis.) 9 (Game One)

The Sabres registered a 4-1 lead before the Scarlet Hawks' seven-run second inning put them in the driver's seat for good. David Navarro (single), Michael Courtney (hit by pitch), Connor Blake (walk) and Brandon Bennitt (walk) each knocked in a run with the bases loaded to give the Scarlet Hawks a 5-4 lead. Courtney and Blake later scored off Ted Howell's double to make the score 7-4 before Howell circled the bases off Nick Bledsoe's single to stretch the margin to 8-4. 

The Sabres' four-run fifth inning would get them within one run of Illinois Tech at 10-9, but Blake made the score 11-9 in the eighth inning when he singled and scored off Howell's double.

The Scarlet Hawks used four pitchers in the contest. Caleb Parks, who entered in the second inning, picked up his first collegiate victory with three strikeouts over four innings of work. Roberto Carselle registered his second save of the season for Illinois Tech with one inning pitched. Ian Duke started the contest, while Joe Fulkerson also saw time on the mound. 

The Scarlet Hawks offense tallied 11 hits. Blake (home run), Bennitt, Bledsoe and Howell each had two hits for Illinois Tech.

Illinois Tech 18, Marian (Wis.) 8 (Game Two)

The Scarlet Hawks pounded 22 hits in the contest; led by three-hit games from Zack Pacer, Michael Courtney, Connor Blake, Ted Howell and Claudio LoBraico. Blake, who hit his second home run of the season, and Howell each drove in four runs in the contest. 

The Sabres held a 3-2 lead after the third inning before the Scarlet Hawks registered at least two runs in five of the final six innings en route to an 18-8 victory. 

Illinois Tech utilized four pitchers in the contest. Austin Richardson got the start and improved to 2-0 on the season with four strikeouts over four innings of work before Samuel Sproule, Zac Lis and Ryan Cantlin closed the game. 

The Sabres used five different pitchers in the contest. 

The Scarlet Hawks will return to action on Wednesday, March 31 when they host Edgewood College (DH) at 12:00 p.m.
