Stars and Scarlet Hawks Split on Saturday

SCHAUMBURG, ILL.—The Illinois Institute of Technology baseball team faced Dominican University (Ill.) (DH) in their final road bout of the 2021 regular season at Wintrust Field in Schaumburg, Illinois on Saturday. The Scarlet Hawks dropped a 5-4 decision in game one, and came from behind to secure a 13-11 victory in game two.

The split gives Illinois Tech a 16-8, 11-7 NACC record while Dominican (Ill.) exits Saturday with a 10-25, 5-13 NACC mark.

 

Dominican (Ill.) 5, Illinois Tech 4 (Game One)

Both teams traded a run in the second inning en route to a 1-1 score before the Scarlet Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the fourth inning behind David Navarro's RBI-double, and Zack Pacer's one-run single. 

The Scarlet Hawks controlled the lead until the seventh inning, when the Stars knotted the game 4-4 with two runs in the frame. Things stayed that way through regulation and into the bottom of the 10th inning, when the Stars secured the victory on Matt Galdi's walk-off bases-loaded sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Simak to make the score 5-4.

Zack Pacer led Illinois Tech at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing that included a run scored, and one RBI. Roberto Carselle and Wyatt Ronek combined to give up five runs (three earned) and eight hits for the Scarlet Hawks. The duo combined to strike out eight batters.

 

Illinois Tech 13, Dominican (Ill.) 11

The contest saw three lead changes. The Scarlet Hawks took the final lead change in the seventh inning, when they dug themselves out of a 9-5 deficit with a seven-run frame en route to a 12-9 lead. It was the momentum Illinois Tech needed as they held onto a 13-11 victory.

Ted Howell was dynamite for the Scarlet Hawks with a 3-for-5 outing that included two runs scored and two RBI. Nick Bledsoe converted a 2-for-3 game with three runs scored and two RBI while Jacob Sorenson rounded out the multi-hit Scarlet Hawks with a 2-for-5 game that included two RBI.

Ryan Cantlin, Caleb Parks and Zac Lis all saw pitching time for the Scarlet Hawks. Parks picked up the winning decision over two innings of work, where he gave up four runs and three hits while striking out three batters. 

Illinois Tech will host Dominican (Ill.) (DH) tomorrow, Sunday, May 9 at 12:00 p.m.
