Women's Lacrosse Beats CUW For First Time in Program History

CHICAGO, Ill. - The Scarlet Hawks opposed one of the Midwest Women's Lacrosse Conference's (MWLC) powerhouse programs on Friday night at Stuart Field, Concordia University Wisconsin. After suffering defeats against the Falcons the last four seasons, Illinois Tech (2-1, 2-0 MWLC) dominated the Falcons (1-2, 1-1 MWLC) 16-5 this time around, scoring 13 first-half goals.

How it Happened

  • Concordia-Wisconsin scored the first goal of the match three minutes in with a man down, but Madison Meredith shifted the focus back on Illinois Tech. The senior scored twice within a 47 second span as Tech led 2-1 after nine minutes of play.
  • After the Falcons tied the score at 2-2, the floodgates opened for the Scarlet Hawks. Tech would score 11 unanswered goals over the half's final 16:40, three of which came with a man-up advantage. Shanie Scoles tallied five of those 11 goals, including three cosecutive goals at one point. The dominant performance gave the Scarlet Hawks a 13-2 halftime lead.
  • The offense kept coming for the Scarlet Hawks in the second half, with Isabella Rubin scoring after just three minutes of play. Eight minutes later, Alyssa DeLuca scored to give Tech a 15-2 advantage and cap its run at 13.
  • CUW would finish out the match with three of the last four goals, but DeLuca was able to tally one more with 9:54 to play. Meredith assisted on both of DeLuca's second half goals.

Scarlet Hawk Standouts

  • Meredith had an outstanding game, scoring three times and dishing out three assists for a total of six points. 
  • Scoles led Tech with five goals, seven draw controls, and three caused turnovers. She also tallied an assist and three ground balls.
  • DeLuca also had an impressive game, contributing four goals, a team-high five ground balls, four draw controls, and two caused turnovers.
  • Both Rubin (one ground ball) and Brooke Rowan (one assist) scored twice.
  • Jennifer Young was a defensive standout, causing three turnovers and scooping up four ground balls.
  • Jessica Cochis made four saves on just six shots in the first half, giving her the win.

Stats to Know

  • Free position attempts were a big reason the Scarlet Hawks were able to create easy offense. Tech drew 21 fouls and converted on 5-of-7 free position shots.
  • Tech outshot the Falcons 25-17.

  • The Scarlet Hawks are off until next Saturday when the team will play at Marian University for another MWLC contest. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m.
